Crawley is a town in which over 90 languages are spoken,
and which is full of a wonderful diversity of music and culture.
Cross Currents brings together musicians - both professional and amateur -
from across that spectrum to create new music which reflects that diversity.
The first phase of the project started over summer 2011 with workshops and performances in The Crawley Folk Festival, the Crawley Internartional Mela and the Crawley Irish Festival
Phase II is now well on its way to the Finale performance at The Hawth, Crawley
on March 2nd 2012

In the first stage of Cross Currents,
a small band was formed out of young
professional musicians nominated by
the Gurjar Hindu Union,
theCeltic and Irish Cultural Society and
the Crawley Folk Festival.
These 6 players worked with composer Robert Jarvis to write a new composition growing directly out of the backgrounds
and skills of the individuals in the band.
This was performed to enthusiastic audiences at Festivals in Crawley in 2011

Phase Two ~ 2012
We're now very excited to be moving on to the
main stage of this innovative project.
We've been gathering many local musicians together
(both professional and amateur)
from across Crawley's huge cultural spectrum to write
another brand new piece of music to perform at a celebratory
concert at the Hawth theatre on March 2nd 2012.
|
To create this very special piece of music, we have been running a series of free
workshops at Northgate Community Centre on Sunday afternoons
(22nd Jan - 26th Feb).
|
The workshops are again led by Robert Jarvis, who is an
expert at teasing out everyone's innate creativity and
nurturing collaborative work.
Whilst taking overall control of the piece, Robert will
ensure that all participants have input into the music and
that the final composition will be an expression of the
whole group.
|
|
|
Thus the participants in the project will be both composers and performers of
this piece, and in the process of writing it they will have the chance to share with,
and learn from, musicians from many different backgrounds.
It will be a really special experience, and a very special celebration of their
home town.

| Background Information about the Project Leaders |
|
| ROBERT JARVIS works as a sound artist and is involved in a wide range of creative activities. As a keen collaborator he has worked with experts from many other disciplines, including outside of the arts; however, a significant amount of his work includes engaging with those who do not see themselves as specialists. |
|
His projects have at their centre the creation and performance of new work and often involve some form of social engagement as he collaborates with local people towards the creation of an installation or performance. This may take many forms, from conventional music performance through to interactive multi-speaker sonic environments.
|
This SEFAN project is being led by Board of Trustees member Adam Bushell.
Adam is a professional percussionist and tutor; spanning genres working with Duck Soup, Stocai and Stomp Ceilidh bands
in the English Folk world, the Tacet Ensemble in Contemporary Classical, Morris dancer in Stepback.
He was the creator of Junctions "English music breaking formation" ,a project bringing together English traditional music
and Contemporary music composition.
