your donation.

Our programmes are:

Information services:
This is our core activity and covers the listings and news pages on our website as well as daily bulletins to the network keeping the community abreast of events and opportunities. This also supports our telephone and email service for the general public looking for specific information or contacts within the Folk/Roots/World genre.

Youth and
Families:
Encouraging each generation to become actively involved in traditional performing arts is fundamental to our work. We support schools and community projects directly, as well as helping Network members develop their own youth work. We also provide advice and contacts for young people wishing to get involved, plus work and performance opportunities.
Current examples:

East Sussex Plumpton Schools Traditional Dance Festival. Read the 2009/10 reports
Meltdown Youth discount for all full-time students up to 25 yrs.old at the public dances. (external website).

Community
Groups:
The vast majority of Folk/Roots activity in the South East is a result of community groups and clubs doing things for themselves, and this contributes greatly to the physical and mental wellbeing of the community.
This programme provides advice and practical support for the existing clubs, and help with creating new ones.
SEFAN is all-inclusive and helps sharing of our common cultures and traditions. A distinguishing feature of folk arts is diversity ~ from Morris dancing to Bulgarian singing, from barn dancing to spoken word ~ folk arts encourage active participation by everyone - all ages and all abilities.
SEFAN is committed to helping build this community spirit.

Seed
Funding:
This fund allows us to help those who wish to start something new. It is informally known as our "Risk and Startup" fund which is intended to provide small amounts of money for members of the Network to try a new venture.
Support from this fund can also be used as match funding for grant applications for more ambitious ventures.

Venue and Artist Development:

The professional part of the Folk/Roots sector is important to its vibrancy.
This programme helps develop new audiences and new performers, as well as supporting established venues and artistes.

The
Stepback Project:
This project challenges the professional arts community to take English traditions seriously. It provides:
  • classes and collaborations for higher education students to learn traditional music and dance
  • gives mentoring and teaching opportunities to young traditional performers,
  • encourages exploration of this extremely rich and important source material.

The English traditions have grown and evolved over centuries drawing in influences from all over the world, and this process of evolution and assimilation continues in the community. It is a true living tradition, yet is rarely researched as an academic subject.
Although there exists one Folk Music Degree course in England (Newcastle Univerisity) there is no dedicated institute (or even university department) for the study and development of the English traditions maintained within its diverse ethnic community; and no professional company dedicated to quality performance and development of this artistic material.
When Folk or Roots material is used in professional work it is often as a pastiche that shows little understanding of the structure of the original material. Perhaps this project can start the process of engagement leading ultimately to the creation of these bodies in parallel to and at the level of the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet.
Many small voices singing in unison can make a powerful sound.
